A contraction of Banjo and Ukulele attributed to Alvin Keech although he probably didn't make the first. The ukulele provided little volume so Keech applied the neck and stringing to a banjo body and created the 'Banjolele Banjo'. Keech patented the name so all similar instruments had to be called Banjo Ukuleles or Ukulele Banjos. The best known exponent was undoubtedly George Formby.
