A wind instrument (a kind of Shawm) used in Brittany and Spain in traditional music. It has a double reed which is held between the lips like an oboe and has a conical bore like a bagpipe chanter with 7 holes. It is a powerful and loud instrument with a very strident sound. Best played outdoors.
Normally pitched in the key of Bb, it is diatonic and spans 2 octaves. Examples are known in other keys.
They are also known in Germany, Greece, and the Middle East and North Africa
