English Banjo Maker

Alfred Davies Cammeyer was born in America - New York (Long Island) in 1861 at the start of the American Civil War and moved to Englandin 188. He was a banjo player and sought out banjo makers in London. In 1892, he formed an 8 year partnership with Clifford Essex to manufacture banjos and publish music.

He died in 1949 and is remembered as a perfiormer and as the maker of the Vibrante and Vibrante Royal Zither Banjos. The Zither Banjo enjoyed a popularity in England but not in America. He retired in 1939 but production of his banjos (including tenor and plectrum models) continued under designer Sydney Yound until 1962.
