A capo is a device to shorten the Fretboard or Fingerboard of Stringed Instruments to raise the Pitch of the strings when played open. Often used on Fretted instruments to alter the Key associated with different standard Chord shapes. For example, with a capo at position 2 (2nd fret), playing a G chord shape will sound the chord of A (2 Semitones up from G).

Consequently, difficult chords in challenging keys can be played as simple familiar ones by use of a capo. It is in effect, a fixed form of Barré.
