Contredanse

The French form of English Country Dance.

When English Country Dancing became popular and spread through court (Elizabeth I reign), the French seized upon the Eightsome Reel and modified it. One form became the Contredanse Anglais or Quadrille as we know it, the other became the Contredanse Francais or Cotillon. These now form the basis for the modern Square Dance.
