Corn Dollies

According to ancient Harvest custom, the last stoop in the field was left and tied into an effigy apparently as an offering to some spirit or goddess who was later burnt or ploughed in.

The custom is thought to have developed into cutting the last stoop and making small effigies - corn dollies and is now a thriving hobby done at any time of year with no regard to meaning.

Some are entirely artificial, made from drinking straws or plastic substitutes.
