Cotillon

A square dance also known as the Contredanse Francais. In a typical square set of 4 couples, the Cotillon would be danced with Changes and Figures rather like verse and chorus. The number of changes was variable with figures like Rigadoon, Balance, Star and Grand Chain.

Apparently it developed in the West Indies in the early part of the 18th century and was later refined in France in the mid 1700s.
