Direct Injection Box

di boxA small box with a 1/4" jack input and an XLR output (typically) used to 'match' the signal from instrument pick-ups (unbalanced, high impedence) to the signal required by a mixing desk (balanced, low impedence). Also electrically isolates the two devices (desk and instrument).

The DI box may be passive (cheaper, no power needed, some signal loss) or active (dearer, power needed - battery or phantom power).
