Fiddle

FiddleA fretless, treble, stringed Instrument capable of producing sounds in the range between excruciating and sweet by the friction of horse hair on gut (sheep, rat, goat - rarely cat). More commonly nylon or steel strung now. It has four single Strings tuned to GDAE - in fifths.
The fiddle is a common term for the Violin when used in Folk Music and really denotes the style of playing - fiddling. Fiddle playing is less exact than classical violin playing in that position of the instrument can vary from the normal chin position to the shoulder, elbow or even hip.
The fiddle is an almost ubiquitous folk instrument, turning up in just about every country and style of music. It is the mainstay of Irish Music, Bluegrass, Old-time, Klezmer and Morris and features in many others.
