The part of a stringed instrument on top of the neck along which the fingers are moved to stop the strings at particular points to produce different notes. The production of notes may be aided by frets in which case it is a fretboard or not like a fiddle where finger position is more by intuition.

With or without frets, the fingerboard needs to be hard wearing and is made of a strip of hard wood such as ebony or rosewood which is laminated to the neck of the instrument.
