A Highland Dance for women.
Flora - after Flora McDonald (1722 - 1790) who met Bonny Prince Charlie and provided assistance to him during the second Jacobite Rebellion. The dance is sometimes called 'Flora McDonald's Fancy' and is a step dance. It is said to honour Flora helping Charles Edward Stuart to escape to Skye in 1746 (after his defeat at Culloden) which he did disguised as Flora's Irish maid, Betty Burke.
Flora was imprisioned in the Tower of London briefly for her part in Charles' escape but later married and emigrated to North Carolina. They both returned to Scotland when they would not swear allegience to the North Carolina Congress after fighting with the British Troops during the American Revolution.
