The normal tuning of a violin, mandolin, tenor banjo, octave mandola (or octave mandolin). It is a tuning in musical fifths - that is the note that each string is tuned to is 5 whole tones from the one below it. Count the starting note and end note.

This means that as you move up the fretboard to the seventh fret you arrive at the point where the note played at the seventh fret is the same as the next string played open. Each Fret is a semitone.
