Garland Dance

Garland dancing is a tradition from the North West of England and is a dance performed by women. The Garland is an arch covered with flowers. Dancers may also use Stave which is a pole covered with flowers. It is thought to be a quite recent tradition from the 19th century Mill Towns although this might just highlight a rural tradition brought to the towns by girls migrating to work in the factories.
