Grand Chain

Not at all a difficult move but it confuses an awful lot of people at Barn Dances. The Grand Chain is a move which came from the Quadrille and is found in the Fifth figure of the Lancers. It is performed like this (assuming a square dance):

  1. Face your partner
  2. Offer them your right hand and grasp it.
  3. Gently pull them past you as you move forward, passing by right shoulders.
  4. There should be somebody coming towards you with their left hand free
  5. Offer them your left hand and grasp it
  6. Gently pull them past you as you move forward, passing by left shoulders.
  7. Repeat Right
  8. Repeat Left etc.

The advice often given is never turn round - just keep going in the direction you're facing.

In The Lancers, the chain is performed half way round and then there is a Balance Step before continuing back to place. In The Caledonians the chain is performed half way round and then couples Promenade back to place.

It can also be performed in Circle Dances such as Lucky Seven.

Not to be confused with Ladies Chain or Corner Chain.
