Hornpipe

Both an instrument and a dance with a tune having a distinctive rhythm. Associated with sailors.

Instrument

A single reed wind instrument made of wood and animal horn.

Dance

Originally in 3/4 time, like a jig, it was a solo dance. Evolved into 2/4 or 4/4 time, it is sometimes a feature of Irish Dance involving hard shoes and clogging.

Rhythm

Usually in 4/4 time. Where a reel would have even notes of Da-Da-Da-Da, the hornpipe often 'dots' the first and third note to give Da-de Da-de and is taken slightly slower in tempo.
