Any instrument is a folk instrument if it is played in pursuance of the folk ethos - and they don't have to be acoustic. Some instruments are decidedly more folk than others and some musical instrument shops even advertise 'folk instruments'. Traditional instruments such as guitars, mandolas and the rest of the family of wooden instruments are typically the product of a factory in the far east at the cheaper end of the scale or are hand made by a luthier at the more expensive end. The difference in price is not actually as great as you might think.
