A Germanic group of tribes who came from the Jutland area of what is now Denmark. They are part of the great Germanic settlement of England together with the Angles and the Saxons after the Romans left in the 5th Century. The Jutes settled mainly in Kent Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The Jutes were considered more advanced than the Angles and Saxons. Ethelbert, as King of Kent married Bertha, a princess from a Frankish tribe and probably started the ongoing relationship which England has with France. The first Jutes in Kent may have been Hengist and Horsa - mercenaries who were hired by Vortigern to defend the Southern shore. Hengist is reputed to have formed the Kingdom of Kent, a step up from the Isle of Thanet originally offered.
