Maud Karpeles

Maud Pauline Karpeles 1885 - 1976 

An English folk-song collector, editor, and scholar. She became involved after attending the Stratford-upon-Avon Festival in 1909 and helped to form the English Folk Dance Society.

With her sister Helen Karpeles she was one of folk dancing team who illustrated Cecil Sharp's lectures.

She also acted as amenuensis to Sharp and accompanied him on collecting expeditions. 

She laid the foundation stone of Cecil Sharp House together with William Kimber, was awarded an OBE in 1961 and received honorary doctorates from Canadian Universities.
