Meta-tune

Is the underlying melody that transcends the instrumentation or arrangement. Take for example the Morris tune Shepherd's Hey (The I can whistle, I can play ... version rather than Signpost). It is the same tune whether played by simple folk instruments or the full orchestral arrangement of Ralph Vaughan Williams. The identifiable melody is the meta-tune.

There is also the phenomena of tunes which are really close relations of each other and some players posit that there was in the past something akin to an Ur A minor Irish Jig (for example) that all A minor Irish Jigs are variations of or evolutions on. This would also be a meta-tune in the sense of an underlying template on which others are based.
