Thomas and Frederick Charles Nickolds' father John was a toolmaker for Wheatstone and both father and sons were involved with Concertinas for Charles Wheatstone. When John was replaced by Lachenal in 1848, John joined with Crabb to form Nickolds, Crabb & Co. Crabb left in 1856 however to work with Lachenal and then went solo in 1860. The company became Nickolds Bros. and traded until 1888.
