Orkney is a collection of 70 islands off the north coast of Scotland. It was once under Norwegian control but has been Scottish since the 15th Century.

20 islands are inhabited including Mainland, North Ronaldsay, Sanday, Westray, Papa Westray, Eday, Rousay, Egilsay, Gairsay, Stronsay, Papa Stronsay, Wyre, Auskerry, Shapinsay, Hoy, Graemsay, Flotta, Burray, South Walls, South Ronaldsay.

Originally inhabited by Picts, the language evolved with the Norse influence to Norn and later by the Orcadian dialect of Scottish.

Orkney holds an annual Folk Festival in May.
