Also called Pandoura, it is an ancient Greek Instrument with 3 courses of strings (a Trichord) and Frets thus informing the development of the Lute as did the Cithara and being the forerunner of the Bouzouki. There are similar instruments all around the Balkan states as well as Greece and Turkey.

The naming of these related instrument is a very confusing subject and it is reasonable from the outside at least to regard the Pandoura, Pandouris, Tambura, Tanbur, Phandoura, Baglama, Saz and Bouzouki as essentially the same instrument.
