Queen Of The May

At the time of May Day celebrations it was customary to select a maiden to represent the Goddess of Spring.

There is a suggestion that the May Queen was a human sacrifice in Pagan days when Beltane was celebrated. The May Queen would be burnt on a bonfire.

There is also a suggestion that the May Queen was the prototype for Maid Marian in the Robin Hood legend.
