Rebec A bowed, typically 3 stringed instrument from the middle ages usually tuned in fifths. Thought to have derived from the Arab Rabab or Rabob. It is carved from a single block of wood and has a pear shaped body and played in the upper body (shoulder or upper arm). Rebecs often had gut frets. A forerunner of the modern Violin.
