Recorder A musical instrument and a member of the woodwind family. It comes in two types - the Renaissance and the Baroque and in various lengths (voices):
Sopranino (F) Descant (C) Treble (F) Tenor (C) Bass (F)
It was once a much more popular instrument until overtaken by the flute, oboe and other wind instruments. It is chromatic and has a range of up to 2 octaves or slightly more in skilled hands. The fingering is unique (not shared by any other instrument) with seven holes on top and a thumb hole at the back.
Modifications in the 17th century led to a sweeter sound and more range and this type of instrument is usually called the Baroque recorder.
