A vibrating component of some wind instruments such as the bagpipes and bombarde. Air passing over a reed causes it to vibrate which in turn vibrates the column of air in the instrument creating the sound.

Reed instruments are either single reed (Clarinet, Saxophone) or double reed (Shawm, Bombarde, Oboe, Crumhorn). Bagpipes may have single or double reed chanters.

Creating a usable reed is an art. They are usually made from split cane but can be made these days from plastic.
