Rolf Gardiner

1902 - 1971.

Gardiner is sometimes regarded as a forester, an ecologist, a ruralist, an advocate of folk traditions and a socialist. Advocating near-military style life on the land with traditional song and dance he was clearly influenced by Fascism and youth socialism. He was instrumental in founding the Cambridge Morris men in 1924, paving the way for the Morris Ring. He also formed the 'Travelling Morrice' with other Cambridge men which toured the villages.

Gardiner was a member of the English Folk Dance Society and one of their teachers. The North Skelton Sword Dance was collected by him and led to its revival.
