Rough Music

Rough Music is a cacophony that is made by villagers as a shaming ritual, usually for infidelity or domestic violence or some similar moral outrage. The Instruments are pots and pans, horns, bells, bones, pokers and other items which will make a loud noise. Sometimes the offender was 'ridden' in front of the band for extra humiliation. The 'crimes' would be voiced and the person's name called. The visit would usually be at night.

Also known as Ran-tanning (particularly Lincolnshire), Riding the Stang (including carrying on a sapling or broom).
