The Celtic festival to celebrate the end of Harvest at the beginning of November which now corresponds to Halloween, All Saints' Day and All Souls Day. One of the two main celebrations which divided the year into light and dark, the other being Beltane. Samhain is the Celtic New Year.

As a Celtic feast, it celebrated the last harvest and was also dedicated to the departed. A place was set at the feast for the dead and tales were told of the ancestors.

Like the other Celtic festivals, Samhain was a Fire Festival as bonfires were important. Traditionally, all other fires were extinguished and then relit from the communal bonfire.
