American Banjo Maker

Little is known of Oscar Schmidt but he was one of the early makers of Banjos and manufactured many different types of instrument including Guitars, Autoharps and in fact most things with strings.

The company grew and changed from the Oscar Schmidt Co. in the late 1800s to  Ocsar Schmidt International Inc. of New Jersey. The Phonoharp Company merged in 1926. The company went bankrupt in 1939 and the Harmony Company of Chicago  IL. bought the rights to Oscar Schmidt trademarks.

The name was kept alive by Washburn in the 1970s  and today the company is the U S Music Corp of Mundelein IL. and the instruments are made in Korea.
