Sir Roger De Coverley
A dance published in Playford and the origin of the Virginia Reel. It was often used as the last dance of the evening - a 'Finishing Dance'. The dance has its own tune which is variously seen and heard in 2, 3 or 4 parts. Known originally as Roger of Coverly from the North of England.
Sir Roger was probably a fictional country squire creation by Joseph Addison for the Spectator newspaper.
For the dance movements, see the Virginia Reel.
