An American Folk Group from New York who sang a mixture of Folk, World Music, Gospel, Blues and Ballads. Formed in 1947 by Pete Seeger (Banjo), Ronnie Gilbert (Vocals), Fred Hellerman (Guitar) and Lee Hays (Guitar). They disn't perform until 1948 and started recording a year later.
Their repertoire has fuelled many a Folk Club singers night: Good Night Irene, On Top of Old Smoky, Darling Corey, Sloop John B etc.
Some of their songs were considered left-wing protest songs and the group came under the scrutiny of McCarthy. They disbanded in 1953 but their short life inspired many of the people who became prominent in the American Folk Revival
