Not normally thought of as a Folk Instrument, the Trombone is a member of the Brass family and is the one with the slide. Like most Brass Instruments, Trombones (Tenor and Bass) are pitched in Bb. This is one reason why they aren't natural Folk Instruments as Folk Tunes tend to be in C, G, D or A (the neutral or sharp keys). The slide arrangement does make the Trombone fully Chromatic though.

A few bands have included Brass Sections to enhance the Folk Sound such as Gas Mark V and New Victory Band, Brass Monkey and Peatbog Faeries.

The early precursor to the Trombone was the wonderfully named Sackbut.
