Wakes Week

Wakes week is a particularly Lancashire holiday associated with the cotton mills of the 19th century. Although they almost certainly pre-dated the mills and had a religious origin, their exact beginnings and their regionality are a mystery. Whether officially sanctioned by the mills or not, almost the entire region's work force and families took the week as holiday, causing a weeks shutdown in most industries.
