Well Dressing

A custom of dressing a well or spring source with flowers. It is often associated with Derbyshire now but also takes place in nearby Yorkshire and Staffordshire. The dressing is actually fresh flower petals pressed into clay in wooden frames. It is very labour intensive and is not celebrated by all villages on a particular day. The season is from May to September.

It is thought to be an ancient custom going back to pagan times but there is some association with the Black Death in the Middle Ages.
